How the Reign of the 1st line of the Scottish Royal family ended:

Malcolm, "Caenmor" Mac Duncan, King of all Scotland and King of Strathclyde was called Caen mor (Great Head) because he had a large head. He killed MacBeth in 1057 at Lumphanan in Aberdeenshire as revenge for his father's murder, Macbeth's stepson Lulach was crowned King and reigned for f months until he too was killed at Srathbogie, Malcolm became King of the Scots. He had been exiled among the English for several years and had gained an appreciation of their customs. He initiated changed blending ancient Celtic customs with those of England and the Catholic Church. He was married about 1066 to Inngibiorg "Earls' Mother" Finnsdottir & had sons (Duncan II, b about 1060, King of Scotland, Malcolm IV; Donald). Married 1068 at Dunfermline Abbey, Fife Scotland, to St. Margaret "The Exile" Atheling--she was an English Princess who was a member of the ct of King Edward the Confessor. In 1091, Malcom and Margaret's brother Edgar Atheling (who had been King of England prior to the Norman invasion) made an incursion into England. Their threat caused the three sons of William the Conqueror to reunite for battle, Edgar and Malcolm were defeated and forced to pay homage to William II "Rufus". Two years later, Rufus complained about breaches to their agreement and ordered Malcolm and Edgar to meet him at Gloucester. Rufus however refused to see him, and Malcolm left. On his way home, he and his eldest son and heir, Prince Edward were attacked and killed by Robert of Mowbray, the Earl of Northumberland, thusly ending the reign of the first line of Scottish rulers.

"The Anglo-Saxons" is the general name given to the Germanic peoples who inhabited Britain between the fifth and the eleventh centuries, between the Romans and the Normans. The name isn't a modern invention: it was first used in England at the court of Alfred the Great (871-899), who came to the throne as King of the West Saxons, but redefined his title as King of the Anglo-Saxons (rex Angolsaxonum) in the 890s, to mark his rulership over all free English people. It was used abroad even earlier, in the time of Charlemagne (768-814), but there it seems to have been to distinguish the "English" Saxons from those who stayed behind on the Continent. (Later on, the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle sometimes makes the same distinction, using "Old Saxons" to refer to the people of Germany.)

"Old English" is the name modern scholars give to the language of the Anglo-Saxons, though some scholars use "Anglo-Saxon" to refer to the language as well as the people. The Saxons themselves called their language Englisc (Old English -sc is pronounced like modern -sh, so they would have pronounced it "English"), and a lot of the low-level structure and vocabulary of our modern English goes back to their Englisc. The main effect of the Norman conquest in the long run was to add an extra layer of vocabulary.

**History of Cumbria

Cumbria is located in the North West of England. The County boundary is naturally defined by the Irish Sea to the West, from the Solway Firth to Morecambe Bay, with the Scottish border to the north and the Pennine hills to the east. In it's history Cumbria has been a fortified and disputed land. The Romans used Cumbria as a military mustering area for incursions into Scotland, and also to protect more southerly settlements. Roman fortification culminated in the construction of Hadrian's Wall, an 80-mile long defensive structure with forts, ditches, encampments and watchtowers. Hadrian's Wall runs from Newcastle upon Tyne in the East to Bowness on Solway in the west, effectively connecting these two coasts, separating England from Scotland and was built between AD122 and AD138. The Romans left England and Cumbria in the 5th Century, leaving the county to an influx of Anglo-Saxon immigrants, which in the end drove the indigenous population of Celts out of the fertile lowland plains.

The 7th to 10th centuries saw rival claims from Scottish and Anglo-Saxon kings for sovereignty over much of the county. These battles saw the end of the last of the Celtic Kings, Dunmail in 945. During this time immigrants from Ireland and Scandinavia were also colonizing the region. This mixture of Celts, Anglo-Saxons and Scandinavians, as well as the previous Roman population gives Cumbria its diverse array of place names. The disputed ownership of Cumbria and the frequently military assaults that took place in the region between the 11th and 14th centuries meant that the purely civil system of administration that developed in the rest of the country did not happen. Instead a series of military based baronies formed, at the heart of which was a string of Castles. Political control of the area by the English was strengthened by religion and the establishment of the diocese of Carlise in the 12th century, even so sporadic raids still continued over the next few hundred years. Today, Cumbria has a population of approximately 500,000.
