RUN (RUM) King of Strathclyde******
*****Strathclyde:
Strathclyde was one of several early medieval Celtic or Welsh kingdoms in present-day S Scotland and N England. Strathclyde was in SW Scotland. To the east was the kingdom of Manaw Gododdin and to the south, Rheged. Little is known of the history of Strathclyde
and the other Welsh (Cumbrian) kingdoms. The origin of Strathclyde is uncertain, but there is evidence that the kingdom had
been consolidated by the middle of the 5th cent. In 945, King Edmund of Wessex defeated Strathclyde and awarded it to King Malcolm of Scotland; however, Scotland did not permanently absorb the kingdom until
the 11th cent. The reason for the disappearance of the ancient British language and culture in the kingdoms is not definitely
known. Dumbarton was the principal town in Strathclyde.)
Jutland (Danish: Jylland, German: Jütland) is a peninsula in northern Europe that
forms the mainland part of Denmark and a northern part of Germany, dividing the North Sea from the Baltic Sea. Its terrain
is relatively flat, with low hills and peat bogs. It has an area of 29 775 km (11,496 square miles), and a population of 2,491,852
(2004).
The Kingdom of Denmark occupies much of the peninsula. The southern
portion is made up of the German Bundesland of Schleswig-Holstein, possession of which has passed back and forth between the
Danes and various German rulers, with Denmark most recently reclaiming North Schleswig (Nordslesvig in Danish) by plebiscite in 1920.
The largest cities in the Danish part of the Jutland Peninsula are Århus, Aalborg,
Billund, Esbjerg, Frederikshavn, Randers, Kolding, Ribe, Vejle, Viborg, and Horsens.
The
five largest cities in Schleswig-Holstein are Kiel, Lübeck, Flensburg, Neumünster, and Norderstedt, although Lübeck and Norderstedt are not in Jutland.

****Orkney Islands: The Orkney Islands are one of 32 unitary council regions in Scotland, and form a traditional
county and Lieutenancy area. Orkney consists of about 200 small islands 16 km north of Caithness in northern Scotland. The largest
island in the group is known as "The Mainland"; about 20 are inhabited in total.
Orkney's administrative capital is Kirkwall on the Mainland.
Home to the Saint Magnus Cathedral, it has about 7,000 inhabitants and a large port. The only other burgh is Stromness at
the western end of The Mainland, with a population of only about 2,000. The third largest settlement is St Margaret's Hope,
on South Ronaldsay.

***Notes of KINTYRE:
Kintyre is a region of
western Scotland located at the southwestern tip of the Argyll Peninsula. The region stretches approximately 30 miles from
the Mull of Kintyre (immortalized in song by Paul McCartney) in the south to East Loch Tarbert in the north. The region immediately
north of the peninsula is known as Knapdale. Geographically, the Kintyre peninsula is long and narrow (at no point more than
11 miles from West Coast to East Coast). The central spine of the peninsula is mostly hilly moorland. The coastal areas and
hinterland, however, are rich and fertile. As such, Kintyre has long been a prized area for settlers, from the early Scots
who migrated from Ulster to western Scotland and the Vikings or Norsemen who conquered and settled the area just prior to
the start of the second millennium. The principal town of the area is Campbeltown (approx. 20 miles by road from the Mull),
which has been a royal burgh since the mid-18th century.

******History of Dalriada:
People from Ireland (Ulster)
settled western Scotland no later than about AD 500, at the time of Fergus Mór son of Erc, an Irish king who apparently was
the first of the Dál Riata to rule from Scotland. Although their presence in two regions assures them this entry in the Polities
FAQ, the Dalriadans were rarely of real importance before AD 700. The main exceptions are their military victories under Aedán,
which were later more than compensated by he and his grandson Domnall Brecc's defeats (these apparently led to the loss of
the Irish territories); and their patronage of the monastery at Iona where Columba (Colum Cille, c 521 - 597) and Adomnán
(c 624 - 709) were abbots. The later dynasty which founded Alba (Scotland) claimed descent from the Dalriadan kings.

Notes of
Northumberland, Scotland:
Ancient Northumberland
Northumberland, England's most northerly county, is a land of historical extremes.
It can claim more castles than any other county, the oldest habitation, the most battle sites, the first successful steam
locomotive, and, strangely, a town that was officially at war with Russia for over a century. The present-day county is a
vestige of an independent English kingdom that once stretched from Edinburgh to the Humber. Before that, the region served as the most northern outpost of the
Roman Empire. This article surveys the history of
the Northumberland region from pre-historic times to the present.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Roman Occupation: As attested by many instances of rock art, the Northumberland region has a rich pre-history. Archeologists have studied
a Mesolithic structure at Howick, which has been identified as Britain's oldest house because it dates to 7500 BC and was occupied for about 100 years. They have also
found tools, ornaments, building structures and cairns dating to the bronze
and iron ages, when the area was occupied by Celtic peoples that had migrated from continental Europe.
What is now Northumberland and southeastern Scotland was occupied by a tribe of Brythonic Celts that the Romans called Votadini.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Norman Invasion and its Aftermath
The Harrowing of the North was a scorched earth policy in the winter of 1069-1070 carried
out by the subordinates of William of Normandy against the Danes of Jorvik. The death toll is believed to be 150,000, with
substantial social, cultural and economic damage. It began when William refused to acknowledge the right of the local population
to self-determination.
After the removal of Edgar Ætheling from the kingship of England, the population of Northern England found themselves without a state and
the protection that the king normally provides. Due to their mixed Anglo-Danish ethnicity, they preferred as their kings Sweyn
Estridsen and Canute the Holy. Despite their having never sworn allegiance to him, William considered the people rebels. The
new king brought with him an ar to provide much needed security for the population, but William saw this as a threat to his
rival claim over northern England, and he moved swiftly to assert himself there. From the River Humber to River Tees, William's
men fired whole villages and slaughtered the inhabitants. Foodstores and livestock were destroyed so that anyone surviving
the initial massacre would soon succumb to starvation over the winter. The plan succeeded beyond his wildest dreams: the survivors
were reduced to cannibalism, with one report stating that the skulls of the dead were cracked open so that the brains could
be eaten.
From the Norman point of view, the tactics were a complete success, as large areas were
still mainly waste when the Domesday Book was compiled over fifteen years later and further rebellions of any substance did
not occur. Contemporary biographers of William considered it to be his evilest act and a stain upon his soul, but the deed
was little mentioned before Whig history and was not mainstream knowledge until then. The Council of the North was enacted
to repair some of these inequities.
